Incoming Students

The Department of Earth Sciences of the University of Pisa welcomes applications from foreign students through the following exchange programmes:

  • Erasmus+: for students from EU Member States and from Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, North Macedonia, Serbia and Türkiye. Study or do a traineeship at our Department, including thesis work. See Erasmus+ Incoming.
  • Exchange Student programme: for students from universities outside Erasmus+ that have a bilateral agreement with the University of Pisa. See Exchange Student programme.
  • Visiting Student programme: for students from any foreign university who want to spend a study or internship period at our Department. See Visiting Student programme.

Erasmus+ application

We welcome students nominated by our Erasmus+ partner universities. Check the list of our Erasmus partners, then contact the International Office or the Erasmus+ Coordinator at your home university to find out whether you are eligible.

Once you have been nominated, we will email you the instructions to activate your account. Then register on the Alice portal and complete your application. Only nominated students can apply.

  • Nomination deadlines: 1 July for the autumn semester or the full academic year; 1 November for the spring semester.
  • Application deadlines: 1 August for the autumn semester or the full academic year; 1 December for the spring semester.

Choosing your courses

  • Courses in English: we offer many courses in English at Bachelor's and Master's level, and many Master's courses include fieldwork. See Courses taught in English and the programmes in English across the University of Pisa.
  • Credits: the University of Pisa uses ECTS credits. Exchange students normally take about 30 ECTS per semester.
  • Learning Agreement: submit your study plan through the EWP Online Learning Agreement (OLA). You can choose courses from other Departments, but more than 50% of your courses must belong to one of our degrees: Master's in Earth Sciences, Master's in Exploration and Applied Geophysics, Master's in Environmental and Climate Sciences, or Bachelor's in Earth Sciences. Check the entry requirements in each course description.
  • Calendar and timetable: see the academic calendar. The timetable is published about one month before each semester starts.

Language requirements

  • Courses taught in English: good knowledge of English, B2 level recommended.
  • Courses taught in Italian: good knowledge of Italian, B1 level recommended.

Thesis and traineeship

To do your thesis or traineeship at our Department, you need a supervisor among our academic staff. Your supervisor must confirm by email to international@dst.unipi.it.
