Lo studio dei composti organici per ricostruzioni paleoclimatiche e paleoambientali in archivi diversi (sedimenti lacustri e marini, ghiacci, carbonati di grotta) si è oggi affermato come fondamentale complemento dei dati proxy comunementi utilizzati per comprendere l’evoluzione climatica passata. In questo ambito esistono criticità e notevoli potenzialità di sviluppo futuro che rendono queste ricerche di punta all’interno della paleoclimatologia. Il Dipartimento di Scienze ambientali dell’Università di Venezia è leader mondiale nello studio dei composti organici in particolare all’interno di carote di ghiaccio e sedimenti lacustri. Il 6 luglio 2016 alle ore 12,00 in Aula C del Dipartimento di Scienze della Terra il Dr. Dario Battistel, dell’Università di Venezia terrà un seminario dal titolo: “The signals behind the stories. Some considerations from biomarker records in lake and ice cores.

“Organic molecular markers are widely used in palaeoclimatology and palaeoenvironmental science. Indeed, the physical-chemical properties of several organic compounds make them attractive candidates for past reconstructions, thus encouraging their use as proxies for environmental and climatic variables in different archives. However, the interpretation of these records is not, in general, a simple exercise (even though if you torture the data long enough it will confess). ‘What kind of story do they really tell?’ is and will always be a debated question.
In this framework, several organic markers, widely considered as proxies for fire activity, past vegetation and human presence, recorded in ice and lake cores, will be considered and discussed in terms of specificity, transport mechanism, stability to degradation and analytical determination, highlighting the strengths, limitations and eventual traps of this approach.”
