The “geophysical market”

The worldwide geophysical market includes two very different sectors in terms of size and structuring: the energy and resources sector (hydrocarbon, geothermal, mining), which makes extensive use of geophysical techniques - in particular of reflection seismic - and the geophysics sector for environment, civil engineering and archeology, which uses a wide range of survey techniques.

Geophysics for searching energy sources
The hydrocarbon sector is present in Italy with a major company (ENI), but it is truly a worldwide international market of professional opportunities. Alongside the major companies, there are also smaller companies and subsidiaries, all seeking for advanced geophysical tools and competences. The search for geothermal resources also makes extensive use of geophysical methods and one leading company is Enel GreenPower, whose headquarters are located in Pisa. The activities of seismic and geophysical exploration performed by these large energy companies are partly independent and, in large part, are entrusted to important service companies such as Schlumberger, CGG, PGS, Polarcus, Ion, Shearwater, BGP International, and many others, some present in Italy with their own structures and offices. Finally, some private Italian companies have specialized in activities of seismic data processing, and work mostly for energy companies engaged in research both in Italy and abroad.

Engineering and Environmental Geophysics
Apart from some large societies, or dedicated branches of large companies already involved in the energy sectors, the segment of geophysics for the environment and for civil engineering is predominantly subdivided into a number of smaller companies, which are provided with dedicated personnel and equipment aimed at offering most of the geophysical technologies, often used in conjunction, to solve a specific problem posed by the client. There are probably at least thirty companies of this type distributed throughout Italy and many more abroad.
The geophysical market also includes a number of enterprises engaged in software development and in the production and distribution of equipment for geophysical surveys and for non-destructive controls. This activity, in Italy only, involves around thirty companies spread over the territory.

Scientific Research
To complete the picture of the geophysical market, there is also the scientific research sector, which is involved in all the applications of geophysics: from deep reflection seismology for the study of the earth's crust, to seismic search of hydrocarbons, to seismic monitoring of the seismogenic areas, to the geophysical techniques for near-surface investigations (environment, geotechnics, non-destructive tests, archeology, etc.), to the development of sensors and new processing and inversion methods. These studies involve the Departments of Earth Sciences, Physics, as well as Electronics, Telecommunications, Environmental and Civil Engineering of the major universities in Italy and abroad. Moreover, a number of large public research centers in Italy include the National Institute of Experimental Oceanography and Geophysics of Trieste (INOGS), the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) and several National Research Council (CNR) Institutes distributed over the territory.

Job opportunities
The job opportunities for a graduate with a Master’s Degree in Exploration and Applied Geophysics are obviously connected to the activities of the "geophysical market", which is constantly evolving and is very dynamic both in Italy and abroad. On the basis of past results, we have ascertained that many opportunities are offered in the geophysics sector for energy resources, both at the energy and service company levels.

The field of geophysics for the environment and the territory, in the form of small companies and freelance professions, provides interesting employment opportunities.      In some cases, the solid preparation of the graduates also in the field of computer data processing can also give access to jobs in other sectors.
For a career in the field of scientific research, this graduate degree offers the opportunity to continue studying towards PhD, Master, and other specialization courses, both in Italy and abroad.

  • Seminar about Ground-Penetrating radar and Glaciology

    The course of Radar Geomorphology organizes a seminar delivered by Prof. Emanuele Forte (University of Trieste): "GPR in Glaciology: potential and challenge"

    The seminar is planned for January 27th and will insight the possibility of GPR to image the interior of glaciers, to infer ice density distribution, locate brines and determine warm and cold domains. All are invited.




  • Discovering the subsurface of Mars


    Roberto Orosei will deliver a seminar inside the course of Radar Geomorphology: "Radar detection of subglacial water under the South polar cap of Mars"

    The seminar is scheduled for January 27th (Room C, 14 PM, Earth Sciences Department) and will illustrate the capability of GPRs mounted aboard ESA Mars Express and NASA Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter to explore the subsurface of Mars. All are invited, see you there.
