Stefano Merlino was born in Sarzana (La Spezia), March 4, 1938. He carried on his studies at the University of Pisa and Scuola Normale Superiore (SNS), obtaining in 1962 the degree (laurea) in Chemistry and, at the same time, the ‘diploma’ of SNS.
Assistant professor at the Institute of Mineralogy of the University of Pisa (1962-1975), ‘libero docente’ (Privat Dozent) in Mineralogy since 1971, he became full professor of Crystallography (1975) in the Faculty of mathematical, physical and natural sciences of the University of Pisa, where he carried on courses of Geochemistry, Crystallography and Mineralogy to students of Geological Sciences, Chemistry, Materials Sciences. Director of the Institute of Mineralogy for several years, he was subsequently Director (1984-1987) of the Department of Earth Sciences in that University.
Stefano Merlino is corresponding member of ‘Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei’, foreign member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences and fellow of the Mineralogical Society of America. He has been Vicepresident of the Società Italiana di Mineralogia e Petrologia (SIMP) and President of the International Mineralogical Association (1994-98). He has been awarded with the gold medal of the ‘Accademia dei XL’ for the Physical and Natural Sciences in 1994, with the Plinius medal of the ‘Società Italiana di Mineralogia e Petrologia’ in 1995, with the Feltrinelli prize for Geology, Paleontology, Mineralogy and Applications by Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei in 1996 and received the Brunauer Award by the American Ceramical Society for the year 2005.
He is member of the Advisory Board of Physics and Chemistry of Minerals; member of the Editorial Board of ‘Schweizerische Mineralogische und Petrographische Mitteilungen’ and of ‘Geoacta’.
Stefano Merlino is author or co-author of more than 170 papers, mostly published on international journals, and mainly addressed to the crystalchemical, structural and microstructural study of minerals, with particular attention to the following themes.
- Structural arrangements of minerals, in particular chain- layer- and framework-silicates, with purposes of classification and crystal chemical definition: description of new types of silicate chains (aenigmatite, hellandite, caysichite,...), layers (reyerite, zeophyllite, okenite,...) and frameworks (wenkite, levyne, liottite, afghanite, pahasapaite, megakalsilite,...), of peculiar associations of structural modules (tetrahedral chains and layers in okenite, single and double layers in reyerite,….); solution of a number of structures which are among the most intricate in the mineral world, i.e. aenigmatite, arrojadite, ashcroftine, gyrolite.
- Polymorphic, polytypic and polysomatic relationships in different series of minerals, with the introduction of numerous new mineral families in polytypic relations (latiumite - tuscanite; minerals in the cancrinite group; pumpellyite - sursassite - ardennite; balangeroite and gageite; sapphirine; stibivanite; burpalite; laurionite; fiedlerite; penkvilksite) and the clarification of the polysomatic nature of important mineral groups (sapphirine - aenigmatite- rhönite group; versiliaite-apuanite group;….). The study of the polytypic relations has been carried on through a wide application of OD theory, demonstrating its capability to predict new possible structural arrangements. The study of the sapphirine - aenigmatite- rhönite group has been particularly important, due to the intricate net of polytypic and polysomatic relations, linking not only a wide number of complex natural phases, but also several synthetic compounds of relevance in materials science.
- Special and regional mineralogy. These studies not only consented a deep understanding of the crystal chemistry of a wide series of minerals, but also led to define, on the basis of a complete chemical and structural characterization, several new species: santite, saffirina-1A, liottite, franzinite, tuscanite, apuanite, versiliaite, cascandite, jervisite, stibivanite-2O, burpalite, lintisite, penkvilksite-2O, fiedlerite-1A, pitiglianoite, quadridavyna, tumchaite, carraraite, zaccagnaite, moëloite, megakalsilite, brochantite-2M2, larisaite, grenmarite, biraite-(Ce), zincalstibite, fluorcalciobritholite, zincolivenite, chukanovite.
- Compositional and structural relationships among the phases in the system NaAlSiO4-KAlSiO4, characterized by a tetrahedral framework of tridymite-type: kalsilite and nepheline, as well as trikalsilite and tetrakalsilite. A new and unexpected feature, which has been revealed by these studies, was the appearance of a kind of ‘internal’ unmixing in trikalsilite and tetrakalsilite, which, through appropriate distortions of the framework, are able to host potassium and sodium cations in distinct sites, in dependence on the variation of the chemical composition, or – at constant composition – in dependence on the variation of temperature.
- Compositional and structural relationships between the two main families of the cancrinite group: cancrinite-vishnevite-pitiglianoite on one side, and davyne-microsommite-quadridavyne on the other side. The intricate relations among the various phases of the davyne-microsommite-quadridavyne family have been explained, on the basis of a careful examination of their structural arrangements, their thermal behaviour, cationic exchanges and phase transformations (thermodynamic and kinetic aspects). These studies have shown that davyne, microsommite and quadridavyne are related by order-disorder transformations: the transition from the disordered phase (davyne) to the ordered ones (microsommite, quadridavyne) is dependent, also in this case, by variations in chemistry and temperature.
- Calcium silicate hydrates (CSH compounds). Relevant results have been obtained through the application of the OD procedures to various phases of the wide group of calcium silicate hydrates (CSH compounds), which are extraordinarily important for the understanding of the hydration processes in cement. The model by H.F.W. Taylor assumes that the initial C-S-H hydrate is characterized by the presence of ‘pieces’ of wollastonite chains connected to calcium polyhedral layers, namely tobermorite-like or jennite-like structures, according to the CaO/SiO2 ratio. The understanding of the real structures of the natural phases belonging to these two groups has been pursued by countless researchers among chemists, mineralogists, material scientists, and has been finally achieved just through the application of the OD concepts, which consented to overcome the problems connected with structural disorder, polytypism and pervasive twinning. It was possible to define the arrangements of clinotobermorite, tobermorite 11Å, of their dehydration products ‘clinotobermorite 9Å’ and tobermorite 9Å (riversideite), and of the most hydrated phase, namely tobermorite 14Å (plombierite), as well as of jennite and metajennite, providing a sound basis to get a deeper knowledge of the complex processes taking place during the hydration of cements.
The wide set of studies carried on the modular aspects and on the OD character of several families of natural and synthetic inorganic compounds constitutes an important basis of the volume ‘Crystallography of modular materials’ (IUCr Monographs on Crystallography, Oxford University Press), of which Stefano Merlino is co-author, together with Giovanni Ferraris and Emil Makovicky.
