• 1990 : Diploma with honours in Geological Sciences University of Pisa (tutor:  P. Elter);

• 1990-1991: Field mapping contract in the Geological Mapping Project of the Regione Emilia-Romagna;

• 1992-1993: Visiting Research Student at the University of Manchester-UK (references: K. Brodie and E.Rutter);

• 1994-1996: Visiting Researcher at Basel University –CH (references: R.Heilbronner, N.Froitzheim, S.Schmid, H.Stünitz );

• 1995 Ph.D. in Structural Geology, defence at the University of Bologna.  Title of Thesis "Deformazione pre-orogenica nelle ofioliti dell'Appennino Settentrionale: aspetti strutturali ed implicazioni regionali";

• 1995-1997: post-Doc Researcher at the University of Pisa;

• 1995-1996. National  Award "G. Dal Piaz" of the Geological Society of Italy;

• 1998-1999: Contract Professor of Basement Geology at the University of Chieti;

• 1999:  Researcher in Structural Geology at the University of Pisa;

• 2000-2001: Contract Professor of Basement Geology at the University of Siena;

 B. Research

His research is focused on two main topics:

1. structures and microstructures of deformed rocks in high strain zones at different structural levels, localization of deformation, microstructural stability and relationships with the geological history. 

2. tectonic evolution of the Northern Apennine within the frame of the geodynamic evolution of the Apennine-Corsica-Tyrrhenian system;

 Presently running studies are mainly devoted to:

• structural evolution of the Alpi Apuane and neighbouring areas (NW Tuscany);

• deformation history and microstructures of Carrara marbles and LT carbonates of the Tuscan nappe;

• structures and microstructures of HP/LT continental unit in NE Corsica and  in the Ligurian ophiolite-bearing units;
